What is left?

“What is Left” is a composition reflecting on the remnants of an explosion—the fragments, the tiny pieces, and the remains of cherished artifacts. At its heart is the melody of the traditional Ukrainian lullaby “Ой, люлі-люлі”(“Oi, lyuli-lyuli”), a song from my native Kherson region. This melody has been freely arranged and transcribed in various ways, both through human interpretation and algorithmic assistance. The original recording of the lullaby begins at 00:54 in the audio-video from the Polyphony Project ( https://www.polyphonyproject.com/uk/song/BMI_UK17100186 ). The piece was composed during a time of profound personal and collective loss. After the explosion of the Kakhovka dam, the Kherson region was flooded and became a battlefield. My family’s country house is there, but we have no news of its condition. That house was a sanctuary for me, a place where I spent many warm seasons. I can still picture the lake surrounded by sand dunes, the small pine forest, and my piano—a treasured companion in that serene environment. Yet, I doubt the piano survived the two-meter-high floodwaters. I don’t know if I will ever return to that place, and if I do, what will remain? Will it be just a piece of ground, stripped of its history? What is left?
